A Change of Direction – August 29, 2023

Recently I’ve been experimenting with creating short videos to capture my experiences while hiking the trails and mountains. Although the blog posts of various hikes have been received well, writing them has become tedious and formulaic, so I thought I’d try something different.

To date I’ve published three on my YouTube channel, and there are links to them at the end of this post. I’m still working through the many issues and tasks associated with building a YT channel, such as naming the damn thing. It may well end up with just my name hanging on it. Many people go this route, forgoing the smart or fancy monniker, simply explaining what the channel is about in the description. Other branding and customization work needs to be addressed at some point, but I figure I’ll deal with that as I go. What’s the hurry?

This transition has provided me the opportunity to learn new things, which is always welcome. I’d never done anything with video creation and editing before, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy the tools are to use. Instead of grinding out another hiking post  at the keyboard I now sift through the video clips, figuring which best presents the story. Then It’s on to editing the clips themselves, which is easier than I thought it would be. But I still have a ton of learning to do- that’s part of the attraction and fun.

Collecting the video while on the trail is easier than taking still photos. Turn on the camera and keep walking and talking, as opposed to stopping to compose and take the photo, then wondering later exactly where the photo was taken and what it was about! There are some downsides though, such as the camera now records the old guy huffing & puffing through the steep bits.

In addition to videos of the trails and mountains I plan to try documenting road trips and other travel, like those covered in the Notes From The Road series earlier this year, and this one from 2022.

Here’s the link to the YouTube channel. I’d greatly appreciate your subscribing to the channel. More importantly, I’d value your feedback about the channel and its content.

Pondside will continue as my blog, and I’m looking forward to returning to “writing” rather than “reporting”. The post volume may lessen, but my hope is the content becomes more interesting and engaging.

Here are the links to the three videos:
